Welcome to the website of
flute teacher Tim Wintersohl! Here you can find information about learning to play the flute and my flute studio in Voorburg. Everybody can learn to play the flute... It does not matter whether you are 7 or 70 years old. This view is the basis of my teaching approach. You can compare learning to play the flute with learning a language. When learning a new language you need to learn the words and the rules of the language but eventually it is all about being able to tell a story or to have a conversation. When learning a musical instrument you also need to learn the technical aspect of it but the most important thing is to let the music express itself through you. |
Tim WintersohlAs a musician I engage in a variety of activities. Next to my work as concert flautist I have been giving flute lessons since more than 15 years.
I got my first flute lessons at the music school of Leverkusen in Germany. In 1998 I came to the Netherlands to study flute at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Rien de Reede, Thies Roorda and Emily Beynon. In 2006 I received my master diploma. Since 2002 I am the flute teacher of a music school in Schipluiden and I have been teaching the flute since years in my own private studio in my home in Voorburg. For more information on my activities as concert flautist have a look at my other website: |

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best age to start playing the flute?
I am being asked this question very often and I think there is not really a good answer to it. Children can learn certain things faster than adults, but adults normally have better musical insights and better analytical skills.
Children should be at least 6 or 7 years old, otherwise they are physically not able to hold the flute. You can always start at a later age. Like I always say: It doesn’t matter whether you are 7 or 70 years old. My oldest student so far started to play the flute at 80 years old.
I don't have a flute. Can I start taking lessons without an instrument of my own?
You can rent a flute from me. If you eventually decide to buy the flute the rent that you paid so far will be transformed into a down payment.
How long does it take before I can really make music?
One of the nice things about learning to play the flute is that it does not take very long in the beginning before you can play something nice. Luckily the beginning of flute playing is much easier than for example learning to play the oboe or violin. After about 10 lessons you will be able to play quite a large number of melodies.
I don’t have time to take a flute lesson every week. Can I take flute lessons less often?
Basically you can take as many or as few lessons as you prefer. If you are a beginner my advice would be to take lessons once a week or every other week otherwise your progress will go a little slow and that can demotivate you. Many of my adult students schedule their lessons according to their own schedule and that means sometimes every other week or once a month, depending on other activities.
What kind of music can I play on the flute?
There is a wide variety of music that you can play on the flute. Of course there is a lot of beautiful classical music but you can also play for example jazz, pop or Irish folk music.
How expensive is it to buy a flute?
If you want to buy a good new beginners flute it costs around €600 and that is of course a lot of money! Many of my students have bought their flutes second hand on ebay or marktplaats, and then it is certainly much cheaper. A good beginners flute by Yamaha or Trevor James will last for many years. So if an instrument has only been played for a couple of years the quality of the instrument will still be good. That is why I actually always advise my students to look for a second hand flute.
